ThyroidChange At the AARDA site, I learned something today; that autoimmune disease has only been recognized for 40 years. Before that, the medical community didn't realize that our own immune system could attack it's own healthy tissue; so really, an understanding of autoimmune disease is in it's infancy.
Some of you may have heard of the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA). They're concerned with disseminating information and finding a cure for all autoimmune diseases. I noticed from a press-release posted on their site that in August 2012, Rep. Ann Buerkle (R-NY) has a bill (H.R. Bill 6218) calling for a national autoimmune disease committee and curriculum.
Representative Buerkle had a sister who died of M.S., and so far, the bill has bi-partisan support.
Because so many of us with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's and Graves') have multiple autoimmune conditions and have people in our family dealing with them, I thought you'd be interesting in supporting this effort. Read the press release and click "advocate" on the left side of the page in order to find easy instructions on low to contact your representative.
